PSP vs Payment Gateway vs Payment Orchestrator
Understand the difference between three core layers of modern payment infrastructure.
PSP
A Payment Service Provider enables merchants to accept and manage one or more payment methods and may aggregate multiple services.
Payment Gateway
A merchant integrates technically with the gateway, which manages connections to the PSPs and payment methods it supports. Commercial relationships with PSPs remain separate.
Payment Orchestrator
A merchant integrates with the orchestration platform, which manages supported PSP integrations and adds advanced routing, rules, cascading/failover, automation and payment-flow control.
When to use each
The right architecture depends on market coverage, risk, redundancy needs, settlement structure and operational complexity.
Availability is subject to jurisdiction, provider underwriting, compliance review and partner acceptance.
